The student health insurance plan for the 2025鈥�2026 policy year, effective August 7, 2025, will continue to be provided by UnitedHealthcare underwritten by Harvard Pilgrim. 2025鈥�2026 Medical Insurance Information
Enrollment (2025鈥�2026)
Massachusetts law and BC policy require students to have health insurance. All students listed below are automatically enrolled in and billed for the student health insurance plan unless they file a waiver:
- Degree program students: Everyone enrolled in a degree program, regardless of credit hours
- Non-U.S. citizens/Permanent residents
- Non-degree students: If you鈥檙e taking courses that add up to at least 75% of a full-time schedule, you will be automatically enrolled.听Students are responsible for monitoring their eligibility status. (For graduate students in the schools of Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, Lynch School of Education and Human Development, Carroll School of Management, Connell Graduate School of Nursing, School of Social Work, Clough School of Theology and Ministry, and Woods College of Advancing Studies, 75% of full-time is 7 credits or more. For undergraduates in the Woods College of Advancing Studies, 75% of full-time is 9 credits or more.)
Graduate students (non-Law): Registration for classes triggers your insurance enrollment, and it takes 5鈥�7 business days for your insurance to show as active in the carrier鈥檚 system. While the fall semester coverage begins on August 7 regardless of when you register, keep this timeframe in mind if you have health care providers who will need to verify your coverage with the insurance company. You should register for classes by mid-July if you need your insurance to show as active in the insurance system on August 7.听This is also important if you plan to enroll dependents.听(Law students鈥� insurance enrollment is triggered when your tuition charge is applied.)
Who is eligible to enroll? Students taking courses in a degree or certificate program, OR taking 75% of a full-time schedule for credit can enroll in the insurance.
Post-doctorate students are eligible to enroll on a voluntary basis.
Medical leave of absence: If you are enrolled in the insurance and take a medical leave of absence effective mid-semester, your coverage will remain active for the remainder of that semester. Coverage may be extended for the following semester with approval from md传媒国产剧 College. Enrollment is not automatic. Contact the Office of Student Services for specifics about eligibility and enrollment.
Insured students have the option of enrolling their听eligible dependents听(a spouse or a child under the age of 26) using the enrollment form under the Forms tab. Dependents must be enrolled for the same time period as the student. For example, a student enrolled beginning in the fall semester cannot purchase dependent coverage starting in the spring unless there is a qualifying event; see the enrollment form for further details. Dependents enrolled for the fall must be re-enrolled for the spring, and you are responsible for enrolling and re-enrolling your eligible dependents each semester. The deadline to enroll dependents is September 19, 2025 for the fall semester and January 23, 2026 for students newly enrolling for the spring.听
Note to students: You need to be enrolled in the insurance plan in order to enroll dependents. To make the dependent enrollment process as smooth as possible, you should register for classes as early as you are able, preferably by mid-July.

UnitedHealthcare Coverage
The plan offers comprehensive benefits that include hospital room and board, inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, lab work, x-rays, chemotherapy, radiation, inpatient and outpatient mental health, physician office and consultant visits, ambulance, and prescription drugs.

Referrals from University Health Services
A referral is not required with the UnitedHealthcare Plan, but there are many benefits to first seeking care or advice from md传媒国产剧 College's University Health Services. Visit听University Health Services'听website for more information.
Coverage Out of State and Abroad
UnitedHealthcare provides听coverage whether you are in Massachusetts, out of state, or abroad.听You should always contact UnitedHealth directly for specific information about coverage and claims.
When travelling, keep your insurance card with you. Outside the United States, you will likely be asked to pay for your medical care first and then will need to seek reimbursement. Covered expenses will be reimbursed on a non-network basis. When you submit claims for reimbursement, you may need to have the itemized bill(s) translated into English and include additional information. Students who initially waived the student plan and wish to enroll can opt back in by the waiver deadline. Directions to rescind waivers are on the Forms tab.
After the waiver deadline, a student may enroll in the student plan only for a qualifying event. Qualifying events include aging out of a parent鈥檚 policy at 26, marriage, birth of a child, or other loss of coverage from an existing policy. Complete the Petition to Add form, which will be available on the Forms tab.
Coverage for graduating students ends on January 8, 2026 (for fall graduates) or August 6, 2026 (for spring and summer graduates). There is not an option to extend the student plan. You can contact UnitedHealthcare about enrolling directly, or explore your options through your state Health Connector. The site for the MA State Health Connector is .
Waivers (2025鈥�2026)

While the deadline for fall and annual waivers is in September,听we strongly recommend waiving the insurance by the end of July.听Otherwise, you may have issues with overlapping policies once the BC plan begins August 7.

Students who are enrolled in a health plan that is comparable to the student plan may waive the BC听coverage through the 听if they are at least 18 years old. Students under the age of 18听cannot file an electronic waiver; see the Forms tab for the under 18 waiver.听
Before waiving coverage, review your plan with the following in mind:
Please review your insurance carefully. If you waive coverage and find later that your insurance does not听cover a claim, you cannot enroll in the BC plan later to have the claim covered. You would need to wait听until the next open enrollment period the following year.
Your plan should be compliant with the Affordable Care Act. It should include, but not be limited to, the听following:
- preventative and non-urgent care
- prescription drugs
- emergency care
- mental health and substance abuse treatment
- surgical care
- inpatient and outpatient hospitalization
- lab work and diagnostic x-ray
- physical therapy and chiropractic care
- immediate coverage for pre-existing conditions
- no annual maximum benefits

Your plan should cover these services in Massachusetts and near campus. It should not limit coverage听to your home state, or limit you to emergency services only while in Massachusetts.
Medicaid plans outside of Massachusetts are not eligible for a waiver because they limit what coverage is听available outside of your home state. MassHealth plans qualify for a waiver, but the following MA听Medicaid plans do not qualify for a waiver: Children鈥檚 Medical Security Program, MassHealth Limited and听Health Safety Net. These plans do not qualify for a waiver due to their limited coverage.听
If you plan to travel in or outside of the U.S., your plan should cover you in those locations.
The state of Massachusetts does not permit waivers with socialized (foreign National Health Service听program) plans.
Your plan should cover you for the full academic year.
Please note:
Incomplete waivers will not be processed. Waivers must be completed every year. All waivers must be听submitted by the deadlines above. Students who do not complete a waiver prior to the deadline will听automatically be enrolled in and charged for the UnitedHealthcare student plan. Once the waiver is听submitted, the charge will be removed from the student account in one business day; students and听authorized payers can verify the adjustment by logging in to the 听("My Bill") and听viewing Current Activity on the View & Pay Accounts tab. Students are responsible for verifying that听their waiver was submitted correctly.
Providing insurance information to other offices on campus (e.g., Athletics, Health Services) does not听fulfill the Massachusetts waiver requirement. If a student does not complete a waiver with the Office of听Student Services, either through the 听or on paper, prior to the deadline, they will听automatically be enrolled in and charged for the student insurance plan.
Your insurance must comply with Massachusetts state law for a waiver. If you reside internationally, your insurance is eligible for a waiver only in limited situations. The state does not allow waivers with international insurance plans, socialized or standard medical policies (including Canadian policies), travel insurance plans, or short-term medical plans. You may be eligible for a waiver if you are insured through (1) your own or a parent/guardian/spouse鈥檚 health insurance plan offered through a U.S. employer or (2) certain government-sponsored programs such as the Government of Kuwait/UAE or Government of Saudi Arabia. MA Medicaid Plans such as Children鈥檚 Medical Security Program, MassHealth Limited, and Health Safety Net do not qualify for a waiver.

Your insurance must be effective on or before August 7, 2025 (for fall and annual waivers) or January 9, 2026 (for spring waivers) to qualify for a waiver. For example, a policy beginning on September 1, 2025 does not cover your full time here and would not qualify for a fall or annual waiver.

Creating Your United Account
Follow the steps to create your UnitedHealthcare account and access your ID card once the plan begins on August 7. When prompted, use your BC student ID and your BC email in username@bc.edu format.

ID Cards
Once you鈥檝e created your online United Healthcare account, you can access your ID card once the policy is active on August 7 by logging in and selecting the ID Card tab.
If you are unable to access your ID card, check the date of the insurance charge on your bill. If you have recently registered, allow 5鈥�7 business days for your ID card to be viewable.听Graduate students听(non-Law):听Your insurance enrollment is activated by your registration for classes, so if you do not have an insurance charge on your BC student account, you need to register for classes, and then allow 5鈥�7 business days for your ID card to be viewable.
Important note: When a health care provider is verifying your coverage, make sure that they use the United phone number on your ID card and our website. United has multiple divisions, so if a provider calls a different United number that they have in their files, they may not reach the student plan division and be told that you do not have coverage.

Dental and Vision Information
Like most medical insurance plans, the student insurance has limited pediatric dental and vision benefits.听Contact United directly for specific coverage information, and note that coverage may end on a specific birthday rather than at the end of the policy term.
Your student insurance includes discount (not insurance) plans for dental and vision.
Coast to Coast Vision Discount Plan:听You are automatically enrolled in the Coast to Coast discount plan if you are enrolled in the student medical insurance plan.听Note that this is a discount program, not a vision insurance plan. SilverCloud Behavioral Health: Your insurance includes access to SilverCloud, which offers online, self-guided programs to assist with mental health issues. SilverCloud is available on any device. Visit for more information.
Summer Enrollment for New Students (2025鈥�2026)
The academic year insurance coverage periods are fall (August 7, 2025鈥揓anuary 8, 2026) and spring (January 9, 2026鈥揂ugust 6, 2026). Students enrolled in the spring insurance will continue to be enrolled through August 6.
New graduate students who are starting their program during the summer term are eligible to enroll in the insurance for a summer period beginning May 10 and ending August 6.
To enroll, log in to your听听using your BC听username and password.听Select the 鈥淓nroll鈥� button under "2024鈥�2025 md传媒国产剧 College Student Health Insurance Plan - Summer"听and follow the听prompts. The summer premium is听$1,044 for enrollment from May 10 to August 6. (The fall enrollment period begins听on August 7.)
Summer 2026 enrollment will open in early May, 2026.
Medical insurance is automatically charged for the fall and spring insurance periods. If you are beginning your program in the summer, you will not be automatically charged for summer insurance and do not need to file a waiver for the summer.
Please be sure to file a waiver for the fall and spring. These waivers are available by mid-June each year; please see the Forms tab.
2024鈥�2025 Medical Insurance Information

Qualifying events include marriage, birth of a child, or loss of coverage from an existing policy.听Students who qualify may submit a Petition to Add form, which will be available under the Forms tab after the waiver deadline.听

Once the new plan begins, you should log in to your United account and download your updated ID with the new network information. (In an analysis of the top 2,035 health care providers used by BC students last year, there was no change in coverage with the new network. Contact UnitedHealthcare for more information.)

Dental and Vision Information
Like most medical insurance plans, the student insurance has limited pediatric dental and vision benefits. See United鈥檚 coverage information for details. Your student insurance includes discount (not insurance) plans for dental and vision.
Coast to Coast Vision Discount Plan:听You are automatically enrolled in the Coast to Coast discount plan if you are enrolled in the student medical insurance plan.听Note that this is a discount program, not a vision insurance plan. SilverCloud Behavioral Health: Your insurance includes access to SilverCloud, which offers online, self-guided programs to assist with mental health issues. SilverCloud is available on any device. Visit for more information.
Summer Enrollment for New Students (2024鈥�2025)
The academic year insurance coverage periods are fall (August 7, 2024鈥揓anuary 9, 2025) and spring (January 10, 2025鈥揂ugust 6, 2025). Students enrolled in the spring insurance will continue to be enrolled through August 6.
New graduate students who are starting their program during the summer term are eligible to enroll in the insurance for a summer period beginning May 10 and ending August 6.
Summer 2024 enrollment has closed.
To enroll, log in to your听听using your BC听username and password.听Select the 鈥淓nroll鈥� button under "2024鈥�2025 md传媒国产剧 College Student Health Insurance Plan - Summer"听and follow the听prompts. The summer premium is听$1,044 for enrollment from May 10 to August 6. (The fall enrollment period begins听on August 7.)
Medical insurance is automatically charged for the fall and spring insurance periods. If you are beginning your program in the summer, you will not be automatically charged for summer insurance and do not need to file a waiver for the summer.
Please be sure to file a waiver for the fall and spring. These waivers are available by mid-June each year; please see the Forms tab.
